MSF Expanding Activities in Turkmenistan
Topic: Foreign Relations
Ashgabat, 19 July 2005 (nCa) --- MSF – Medecins Sans Frontieres, also known as Doctors without Borders – has thanked the government of Turkmenistan for its cooperation and expressed desire to expand its activities in the country.

Here are excerpts from a letter by Josje Reinartz, Operational Director, MSF-Holland, to the president of Turkmenistan:

MSF would like to congratulate you personally and also the employees of the ministry of public health services and medical industry and the people of Turkmenistan on the tenth anniversary of the national programme ‘Health’ that was initiated by you in 1995.

MSF has been working in Turkmenistan since 1999. MSF cooperated fruitfully with the ministry of public health services and medical industry of Turkmenistan on implementation of DOTS strategy for treatment of tuberculosis, as approved by the WHO, and it has promoted the acceptance of new national policy of Turkmenistan on treatment of tuberculosis from the beginning of this year.

MSF is also very grateful for close cooperation of various ministries and departments of Turkmenistan in transportation of humanitarian aid cargo and movement of international staff of MSF through the territory of Turkmenistan for the support of humanitarian programmes of MSF in Afghanistan.

From the start of 2004, MSF has worked on the programme for treatment and preventive care of children’s diseases in Magdanly area in Lebap province and rendered support for successful realization of government policies in the field of treatment and prevention of childhood diseases.

At present, pending approval, MSF plans to expand its activities in Turkmenistan by including WHO-recommended strategy for protection of the health of the mother. This proramme is for the entire territory of Turkmenistan and we are awaiting approval.

MSF would like to use this opportunity to express its gratitude for the support of our activities in Turkmenistan and hopes for continuation and expansion of cooperation with the ministry of public health services and medical industry of Turkmenistan.

MSF also hopes to continue rendering positive contribution to the national programme ‘Health’.

MSF also uses this opportunity to renew its assurance of highest respect to His Excellency the President of Turkmenistan.
